HELP IMPROVE PATIENT CARE IN OUR AREA!
The SAXON SPIRES PATIENT PARTICIPATION GROUP has been established for 2 years now and acts as an independent representative on behalf of patients and their carers as well as creating new initiatives to improve patient education and provide support not otherwise provided by Guilsborough Surgery. We have a wide cross-section of members in the Group, and all of us have used the services of the Surgery. In the past years we have:

Established a ‘healthcare education’ board in the surgery providing useful information on a range of topics

Co-ordinated and managed forums for carers to meet medical and other support workers and discuss issues of concern

Created a new leaflet for carers detailing the range of support services
available

Initiated a new ‘Tai Chi’ service for those patients who would benefit from gentle relaxing exercise

Set up a ‘Diabetes Awareness Day’ for diabetics and locals who might want more information or a simple blood test check

Researched the need for a ‘local voluntary transport service’

Regularly met with Surgery staff to discuss and agree issues of importance to patients

Managed public meetings to discuss the implications of the Brixworth and Guilsborough Surgeries merger
We now want to increase our level of activity and generate more initiatives that can help users of the Surgery and the local population as well. Plans are in place for a
local ‘healthy walks’ scheme, more ‘health-check’ forums and walk-in educational sessions, and developing a stronger link with the Surgery and the local Primary Care Trust as well as the National Association of Patient Participation Groups. If you are interested in becoming a member of our group, can help us with organisational and communication issues, and are able to meet for 1½ hrs every month at the Surgery (usually Wednesdays from 7.00pm-8.30pm), we would really like to hear from you. If you would like further information, or an informal discussion on what might be involved, I can be contacted by phone on 01604 743554, or by email: ‘john@fle.co.uk’. Our next meeting is planned for WEDNESDAY APRIL 1st 2009 at 7.00pm at Guilsborough Surgery.
The GPFA has been in existence since 1977, following the purchase of 7.5 acres of land from Sir John Lowther. The money to purchase the land was raised through a series of village fund-raising events.
The GPFA:

Manages and co-ordinates  the use of the Playing Field by  organisations, currently the Senior and Junior  Cricket Club, Junior Football Club,   Bowls Club and Guilsborough Primary and Secondary Schools,

Ensures the Field and facilities are safe and fit-for-purpose,

Maintains the Field, buildings and facilities,

Manages the finances, raises funds needed  for the operating revenue and capital projects

Improves the facilities,

Encourages organisations to use the facilities for sporting activities for people of all ages and sex, but especially ladies and girls.

Provides sporting and outdoor facilities for the local community.
About £7000 is needed annually for the maintenance of this village facility; half the cost is raised by the organisations using the facility, with the GPFA raising the remainder.
Additional money is needed for capital projects.

Sporting activities:

Senior Cricket is played on Saturdays with first and second teams. Cricket has been played in Guilsborough since 1890, at various locations, and at the Playing Field since 1978. A Guilsborough Social & Gentleman’s team occasionally play on Sundays.

Junior Cricket for those aged between 7 and 17 is played 3 times per week with practices or games on Mondays, Tuesdays, Fridays, and Sundays. Junior cricket has been played since 1982.

Junior League Football is played on Sundays for under 9 & 10s year olds, and started in 2004.

Bowls is played daily with regular competitions in the summer by an enthusiastic group of mainly senior citizens. Bowls has been played since 1987. Recently children from Guilsborough School have been taught to play and some have played for the club.

Guilsborough School use the facilities for cricket games and practices.

Guilsborough Primary School has used the facilities for football coaching and each year for their Sports Day.
Development of the facilities:

1977 Temporary changing and toilet facilities were initially installed.

1985/6 Lawn Green Bowling Pitch built by members.

1992 An artificial cricket wicket was installed on the East side of the square and is used for most of the Junior Cricket games.

2000 An automatic watering system for the elderly Bowls players was installed. Cost £6,000.

2000 A manual but powerful watering system to the Cricket Square was installed. £1,000.

2000 An Electricity supply to the Bowls Trailer was installed, requiring a 200 metres trench.

2000 A modern Drainage System installed. The original Mole Drains had collapsed, which frequently resulted in the Field becoming waterlogged and cancelled games. Cost £20,000.

2000 Another Tractor, (the engine of the previous one corroded which was the final “Nail in the coffin”. Cost £3,000.

2003 50% of the cricket square was re-laid at a cost of £9,000.

2004 The remaining 50% of the cricket square was re-laid,cost  £9,000.

2005 A new sit-on roller was purchased at a cost of £6,000 thanks to the Bernard Sunley Charitable Foundation.

2006 Automatic watering to Cricket Square £1,500
