CREATON WALKING GROUP
What a fantastic summer it has been (unless you are a farmer)! Even hotter than 1976 for those of us who can remember that far back! Perhaps a little warm for walking, especially for doggies, but the early mornings were cooler, weren't they?
The Creaton Walking Group were lucky to walk in sunshine throughout the summer and are now hoping the Autumn will bring dry Saturday mornings with beautiful views and wildlife.
The September walk from Ashby St Ledgers will have taken place by the time you read this and the October walk will be planned.
If you would like to walk 8 miles over pretty footpaths meet at Creaton lychgate at 10am on the second Saturday of the month. New walkers and well-behaved dogs always welcome.
Next walks are on:
- Saturday 11th October
- Saturday 8th November
Creaton Singers
Have you seen the advert for Ollie’s Charity Concert on Sunday 5th October? It is at 2.30pm in the URC in Creaton. The Creaton Singers have been practising hard to put together a varied programme of familiar and not so familiar songs. Please come and help raise funds for Hft Learning Disability Allies, and support Ollie who is running the Athens marathon for this cause.
Once the concert is over the Creaton Singers will be turning their attention to Christmas. Save the dates for the following:
- Saturday/Sunday 6th/7th December, 2pm: Christmas Carols at Welford Christmas Tree Farm.
- Wednesday 17th December, 7:30pm: Creaton Singers Annual Christmas Concert in Creaton URC, preceded at 7pm by Carol Singing on the Green and around the village.
- Saturday 20th December, 2pm: Cottesbrooke Carol Service with the Creaton Singers supporting the singing.
If you enjoy singing why not come for a taster session? We meet on Tuesdays from 7.30pm to 9pm in Creaton URC on the High Street. No audition necessary.
Creaton WI
“Bystanders Can Be Lifesavers” Campaign
Did you know there are over 30,000 out-of-hospital cardiac arrests a year in the UK and fewer than one in ten people survive? Early cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) and defibrillation can more than double the chances of survival.
The National Federation of Women’s Institutes is running a campaign to increase public confidence in the delivery of CPR and the use of defibrillators, thereby giving every person the best chance of surviving a cardiac arrest.
In Creaton we are lucky enough to have a defibrillator but there is also fear and uncertainty about using it. Furthermore, research by St John Ambulance found that, due to the close contact needed, over 1/3 of the public feel uncomfortable about giving CPR to, or using a defibrillator on, women.
In support of this national campaign, Creaton WI is arranging for St John Ambulance to provide a free training session on CPR and the use of a defibrillator, to any member of our village community who would like to attend; we very much hope that many of you will!
The date and time have yet to be confirmed but if you are interested, please email wicreaton@gmail.com to receive further details as soon as they become available.
Below is our general programme of talks for the next 3 months, all held in the United Reformed Church:
October 8th (2.30 p.m.) “The Repair Shop and Me” with WI member and popular speaker, Christine Farmer. An interesting insight, perfect for fans of the television programme.
November 12th (2.30 p.m.) Jo Parish from Past Alive reveals the secrets of “Queen Victoria’s Wardrobe” from the Royal drawers up!
December 10th (2.30 p.m.) Craft Session – Iris-folded Christmas cards.
All are welcome, for more information please contact President Daphne Clark, 01604 505546 or email wicreaton@gmail.com.
Over The Counter….
The shop has been delighted over the summer to provide as many ice creams and cold drinks as possible during the hot weather. Now the air is cooler yet each season brings its benefits for the shop. Back to school has seen the welcome return of trades people in the village buying breakfast and lunch. We offer a great range of sandwiches, fresh fruit and treats, and you can warm up a delicious Joseph Morris sausage roll or pie in the microwave, and while you are waiting, get yourself a freshly-brewed coffee.
Memories of those summer holidays do not need to be too far in the distance. Bring back those idyllic moments over breakfast with our croissants and other French pastries. We have these available 6 days a week and you can also buy frozen ones to bake at home.
We have been thrilled to welcome several young volunteers, both those returning to Creaton
during the university holidays and those volunteering for first time. It is a great way to learn retail and customer service skills, as well as being fun. You can volunteer at the weekend and after school. Pop into the shop and have a chat with whoever is behind the counter.
Christmas is only about 10 weeks away, so come and have a look regularly as we stock the shelves for the festive season. You can order all your meat, greengrocery and grocery items from us.
We know we are doing well - our customers tell us, and they keep coming back! However, do you have any ideas for how we can improve the shop? Please come and talk to us when you are next in the shop. We always like to hear new ideas for shop design, product range and advertising. Creaton Village Shop is your shop and we love to see you supporting it.

Talks
The 2025/26 season started in September with a bit of a look forward to the series of talks after Christmas. Before then, the following subjects are the topics for the monthly meetings:
October 16th: Northamptonshire Country Houses During the Civil War with Graham Evans
November 20th: Re-discovering Guilsborough: Iron Age and Roman Forts and the Demolished Hall with David O’Neil
December 12th: What Happened to the Princes in the Tower? With John Perkins
After Christmas, to commemorate the 800th anniversary of St Michael & All Angels, the talks will have Creaton connections, including a look at the history of the Church building, and the local connections with the Civil War.
The Orland Family
Another talk will look at the Orland family in the 18th and 19th centuries. Inspired by the two gravestones by the lychgate, Patsy Hollingum will explore this family who held important mills in the area, including a windmill near to Green Lane. If you have any connection with the Orland family or know anything about the mills in the area, please contact Patsy, email: hollingump@gmail.com.
Creaton Volunteer Drivers wanted …. Do you drive?
Do you sometimes have a little spare time to help others? Would you be willing to take people who cannot currently drive to the hospital, doctors, dentist etc?
Creaton used to have a scheme for providing this service and there have been several requests to revive it.
You would be paid mileage at the Government rate and for parking.
Going on the register does not commit you to anything. As each request for a lift comes through you would be able to accept or ignore it. Interested?
